Situated in the heart of a farming community, this quiet, small town in Southeastern Historic Halifax County, provides "easy, relaxed living" with the advantage of close proximity to larger cities providing excellent medical, educational and cultural opportunities.
Large oak, maple, dogwood and pear trees along with crepe myrtles line business and residential streets, furnishing a wonderful setting for the many lovely, old Victorian and Greek Revival homes as well as the comfortable ranch and bungalow styles. You are sure to enjoy the Crepe Myrtle Festival, held in August each year, drawing huge crowds.
This small town has many attractive features. Recreational activities abound on the Roanoke River, which provides fishing, boating and hunting. At Sylvan Heights Waterfowl Park located at Scotland Neck you can discover the world's largest collection of waterfowl which includes over 1500 birds, ducks, geese and swans and some of the rarest and most endangered in the world. There is a beautiful boardwalk across a natural wetland and the only handicapped accessible tree house in North Carolina. Visitors of all ages, including seniior citizen groups and school groups, are welcome and tour guides and carts are available upon request. There are also picnic tables, nature walks and hidden places for viewing wild waterfowl as well as a gift shop and collection of unique avian artwork.
Life is good here for senior citizens, with the Senior Center offering well-equipped fitness and workout facilities. The town recreation department also provides a variety of activities for residents of all ages. The newly expanded Scotland Neck Memorial Library offers an impressive selection of volumes as well as advanced technological resources. Scotland Neck Family Medical Center houses physicians' offices. Our Community Hospital/Bryan Long Term Care complex has recently added the Allison-Shearin Rehab and Wellness Center offering physical therapy and occupational therapy.
